Stretch from my Figurative series was selected and awarded an Honorable Mention by Jessica Randolph, the independent juror of The Art League’s August 2025 Open Exhibit. About the selected piece:
Stretch is mixed media: pastel, acrylic, ink, collage and pigment print on a 36×36″ wood panel. Here, I present a male figure in a state of physical extension, adorned with patterns inspired by African body art and batik fabrics. The figure’s skin displays a mosaic of colors and designs, reminiscent of various African tribal adornments. This detailed application on the figure contrasts with the background elements, which feature bold colors such as lime green and fuchsia alongside architectural or abstract lines. The title ‘Stretch’ refers to the figure’s pose, and also acknowledges the ongoing resilience and endurance required amidst current hardships and conflicts present in parts of Africa. The painting combines traditional artistic influences with contemporary elements.
