About Castle Fields III
Media: Layered hybrid media (watercolor, acrylic ink and pigment print) on watercolor paper mounted on a 24×24-inch cradled wood panel (third variation).
Concept: Having spent most of my life in the DC area with access to significant works by the founders of the Washington Color School, I’ve closely studied their techniques, yet deviated from traditional colorist styles in the Landscape collection within my Colorfield series. These works present a dialogue between the structured precision of cartography and the fluid, emotive qualities of colorfield abstraction. By overlaying rigid, grid-like structures and “fenced” boundaries onto ethereal, atmospheric horizons, I attempt to visualize the human impulse to map the natural world. The vibrant, saturated palettes create a sense of topographical depth, yet the bleeding edges and layered transparencies suggest a landscape that is constantly shifting. This tension illustrates the gap between the known and the unknown, where the comfort of a recognizable landmark dissolves into the vast, unknowable mystery of pure color and light.
