SUMMARY:BEST-in-SHOW at The Art League – November Open Art Exhibit 2023
DESCRIPTION:Orbs on Rocks from my Architectural Series (20×24″ mixed media on canvas) was selected and received the BEST-in-SHOW Award by Chelsey Luster\, juror for the November Open Exhibit at The Art League\, Alexandria\, VA. \nI also have several other paintings in Gallery 75 of The Art League (same location)\, one on the wall and five on the racks. \nJoin us for the opening and award reception on Friday\, November 10\, 6 – 8 pm.\nYou may also visit this art show throughout November 2023 any day of the week\, 10 am – 6 pm. \nA few words about Orbs on Rocks:\nStonehenge and other ancient and modern architecture inspire this multimedia painting from my Architectural series. I took photos of old walls with interesting textures of rocks\, concrete and wood\, collaged them digitally to create the foundation of the composition\, printed the digital image on canvas and then painted over with acrylic\, pastel and spray paint. My goal is to combine modern and antique textures while creating color and textured fields\, pushing the boundaries of abstract painting toward a more familiar sense of depth and space.

SUMMARY:The Art League September 2023 Open Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Quantum Gravity 24×24\n  \nQuantum Gravity from my Perspective Series (24×24″ mixed media on wood panel) was selected by Regina DeLuise\, juror for the September Open Exhibit at The Art League\, Alexandria\, VA. \nThe opening reception is Friday\, September 8\, 6 – 8 pm\nYou may also visit the show from September 7 – October 8\, 2023\, all days 11 am – 6 pm. \nA few words about Quantum Gravity:\nThis is a painting from my Perspective Series – a revival of the tools\, namely perspective grids\, invented by Renaissance artists. My interest in contemporary theoretical science indirectly inspired this. Our understanding of gravity has undergone several facelifts in the past hundred years and is still evolving. Here\, I’ve double-collaged (first digitally and then physically) two digital simulations of 3D sculptures\, one I created and the other a stock image I altered on top of the painted wood panel. The merging of digital and physical paintings reminds me of how scientists try to superimpose macro and quantum physics. I truly grasp their struggle when I deal with simulating perspective while keeping the theme abstract. It is the same type of juxtapositioning that I hope will work and keep altering until it does. I let the viewer interpret the narrative here. It’s all about our perspectives and how they can be so different from reality if there is such a thing as reality.

SUMMARY:The Art League - August emBODY Art Exhibit 2023
DESCRIPTION:My painting Actaeon from my Perspective Series (48×36″ mixed media on wood panel) was selected by Ahrong Kim\, juror for the August emBODY Exhibit at The Art League\, Alexandria\, VA. \nI currently also have a smaller painting Harvest Dawn from my Landscape Colorfield series in Gallery 75 of The Art League (same location). \nVisit this art show throughout the month of August any day of the week\, 10 am – 6 pm.\nFew words about Actaeon:\nThis is a painting from my  Perspective Series – a revival of the tools\, namely perspective grids\, invented by Renaissance artists. I first applied this depth-simulation trick to my otherwise intuitive abstract art in 2018. This immediately generated a somewhat surreal look\, asking for more elements of dream-like visuals\, such as stylized human figures. Inspired by Greek mythology—Actaeon the hunter became the hunted\, watching the goddess of hunters\, Artemis (Roman Diana)\, bathing—he was transformed into a stag by the goddess. This story is the iconic motif by which Actaeon is recognized in ancient art and Renaissance and post-Renaissance depictions. I portrayed him as a contemporary superhero while preserving the antique and Renaissance appeal as part of my Perspective series. The sun also plays a vital role in balancing the composition and further establishing the ancient pagan mood (sun worship).

SUMMARY:Out of the Blue\, National Juried Art Show
DESCRIPTION:My painting Escape from my Architectural Series was selected by Susan O’Neill for the National Juried Art Show Out of the Blue presented by Gallery Underground\, Arlington\, VA. \nJoin us for the opening reception Friday\, August 4\, 5 – 7 pm\n  \nIf you miss the opening\, you can visit Mondy through Friday before August 25\, 2023\, 10 am – 6 pm \nFew words about my Architectural Series and the selected painting Escape:\nAs a colorist artist\, I constantly seek concepts and compositions to expand my color fields beyond the traditional flat abstract or geometrical forms. Using depth and some depiction of reality serves well as a chromatic playground. Initial architectural sketches were born out of my Perspective series. While simulating 3D structures on my computer and tablet as studies\, I realized some of the attributes of digital art are more expressive. So\, I started printing and adhering certain areas as collages to my artwork. Then I began digitally infusing the images of half-finished paintings\, adding digital layers and further painting again over the prints. Therefore\, they are one-of-a-kind and not printed editions with many layers of paint on top of the initial inkjet print. \nEscape\, selected for this national juried art exhibit\, is one of the three paintings I’ve done with abstracted architectural forms where blues dominate the foreground and warmer colors are pushed to the background. This reverses the academic notion of warm colors in front and cold colors in the horizon and creates an unexpected composition that works well as a color field painting.
