DESCRIPTION:Canyon I from my Colorfield series is selected by Elizabeth Wilson\, Head Registrar of The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibitions Services\, for the Landmark: Iconic American Views exhibit\, at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center. \nDuration:\nThe exhibition runs through September 20\, 2026\, offering you ample time to experience the exhibit and the beautiful gardens. \nAbout the selected piece:\nCanyon I\, watercolor and pigment print on a 16×16″ water media panel\, is one of the landscape pieces in my Colorfield series\, which focuses on a dialogue between the structured precision of cartography and the fluid\, emotive qualities of colorfield abstraction. They visualize the human impulse to map and categorize the natural world by overlaying boundaries onto atmospheric horizons. Red and warm colors dominate the palette in these series\, with cold hues used as accents. The degree of abstraction varies; some\, including Canyon I\, are inspired by the Midwestern US\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, and the Grand Canyon. \n

As one of the gallery’s most anticipated annual shows\, miniMAX highlights the dramatic contrast between extreme scale and intricate detail\, bringing together exceptional works from local miniature artists and large-scale creators. \n\nAbout the Artwork\nAt play in Fallings are themes of rescue\, adrenaline\, and vivid dreams of floating\, flying\, or plummeting from sky to water. Set against a soft\, misty pastel background\, male figures rendered in striking warm tones and deep cool hues drift across the canvas. DESCRIPTION:Prey from my Baroque series has been selected for the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s Made in VA Biennial 2026 exhibit and is currently featured on the museum’s website. This is a true honor for me\, especially since I received the following remarks from the museum’s senior curator\, Heather Hakimzade\, in her announcement email: \n“This year\, Made in VA received an unprecedented number of applications and reached our submission capacity for the first time in the exhibition’s history. The jury process was incredibly competitive\, and your work stood out among an exceptionally strong group of submissions from artists across the Commonwealth. \nOpening reception: September 10\, 6:00–9:00 pm \nExhibit duration: September 11\, 2026–March 21\, 2027 \n\nAbout the selected piece:\nPrey (mixed media on 30×24-inch wood panel) reflects on victims of immigration and individuals confined to predefined gender identities\, trapped in the web of established institutions. The overly decorated trap is guarded by a green\, half-spider\, half-insect creature that both depicts the intricate\, often deceptive allure of oppressive systems and symbolizes the pervasive nature of societal judgment.

DESCRIPTION:Where: The Art League Gallery\, Alexandria\, VA \nOpening Reception: October 9\, 6:30 pm \nExhibition Duration: October 7 – November 8\, 2026 \nFeatured Work: Moonrack (mixed media—watercolor\, ink\, acrylic\, pastel\, and pigment print on 24×24″ water media wood panel) from the Architectural series \nI am excited to announce that Moonrack from my Architectural series has been selected for The Art League’s October 2026 Open Exhibit by the independent juror\, Paul Sattler. \n\nAbout the Artwork\nOne of the Blue collection within my Architectural series\, Moonrack is an imaginary scenery combining a structurally impossible construction over water\, a full moon\, thunderbolts\, and pristine versus corroded surfaces—serving as color fields and ultimately achieving a chromatic experience. I have taken numerous photographic studies of surfaces near water at different times of day\, digitally altered and combined them with my analog sketches\, and then pigment-printed them on watercolor-type archival paper. I then worked on the print with watercolor\, ink\, and pastel\, making it unique and not an edition. This prestigious event supports the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) and local artists. \nMy participation came by invitation\, followed by an extensive jury selection process. I am thrilled that three of my works were chosen for this significant fundraiser. Last year\, Art Night raised $164\,960 for WPA and the local arts\, marking this the biggest fundraiser in 25 years. We are hoping to top that this year. \nHow to participate:\nHickok Cole Art Night is a private event; however\, anyone can view and purchase artwork online! Bidding opens on October 15\, 2026\, and the online sale remains active for one full week following the main event.
